Mediator Qualifications
MEDIATOR I
DUTIES
Conducts mediation regarding custody and time-sharing between parties in a contested divorce.
Assists parents in developing a written parenting plan for custody and visitation rights.
Mediators act as private independent contractors contracting with the court on a case-by-case
basis and bear responsibility for all business liability and business fees.
EDUCATION
A Master's Degree. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the
desirable qualifications. An example of this would be a Master's Degree in psychology,
counseling or social work and experience in mediation or family counseling.
A minimum of 40 hours of training in Custody Mediation, by an approved program.
Continuing Education of a minimum of 18 hours per year.
Join the New Mexico Mediation Association or a comparable federal mediation association.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of laws affecting child custody and domestic law.
Knowledge of mediation skills, child development and family dynamics.
Knowledge of individual and family counseling techniques.
Ability to use initiative and judgment in working independently while recognizing matters which
require assistance.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to establish and maintain
cooperative work relationships and relate effectively with children.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion in dealing with sensitive information; to
reliably determine the urgency of information or potentially volatile situation; to respond with
tact, composure and objectivity when dealing with individuals who may be experiencing
significant stress.
