Judge John A. Dean, Jr. has been a resident of San Juan County New Mexico since 1958. He graduated from Farmington High School and received his bachelors degree from the University of New Mexico. He received his law degree in 1977 from the University of New Mexico. His graduation followed a long tradition in his family started by his grandfather and continued by two of his uncles and cousins. Judge Dean is a member of the San Juan County and New Mexico Bar Associations.
Judge Dean practiced law in San Juan County from 1979 until he was appointed to the bench in February of 2003. His practice involved all areas of civil and criminal law. Judge Dean served as San Juan County Domestic Violence Commissioner for seven years and Pro Se Hearing Officer for two years.
Judge Dean is married to Gayle and they have two children, Kama and Kellen. John and Gayle are active and involved members of their community and church.
Judge Dean served as San Juan County Commissioner from 1992 through 1996, serving as the chair for three of those years. He was President of the New Mexico Association Of Counties and San Juan Economic Development. Judge Dean was also the county's representative on the Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments which included McKinley and Cibola County. He was a member of the DWI Task Force which resulted in the formation of the DWI Treatment Jail. Judge Dean is presently on the board of the San Juan County Chapter of the Red Cross.
Judge Dean took office on February 11, 2003, and his court room is located at 920 Municipal Dr Farmington, New Mexico. His case assignment includes adult criminal cases, civil and domestic relations.
